eSnipe vs Trove: two free eBay alert apps, compared fairly

Trove describes itself as a "free 60 second eBay notifications app". Its story page says it was "created by an eBay buyer who refurbished iPhones and needed a faster way to spot top listings before anyone else", and the product still reflects that: a phone app, a list of saved searches, a push notification when something new matches, and a tap that opens the listing in the eBay app. There is no subscription and no paid tier; the FAQ explains that Trove earns "a small commission from eBay when purchases are made through the app".

eSnipe works the same way at the money end. It is free forever, funded by the eBay Partner Network, and the price you pay on eBay does not change. The difference is in shape. eSnipe is a monitoring service with a web dashboard and a phone app on top, and every monitor can send to a Discord webhook, a phone, or both. It watches public eBay search results, never asks for an eBay login, and does not bid, snipe or buy.

So this is not a free-versus-paid comparison. It is a comparison between a tidy single-purpose phone app and a service designed to run a lot of searches and route them to wherever you and your group actually look.

Trove's headline claim is "instant app notifications within 60 seconds of listings going live", softened on the App Store to "usually within 60 seconds". Its FAQ has an honest answer to the question of why a fresh alert can already say "listed 5 mins ago": eBay often takes three to five minutes to make a new listing publicly visible after the seller posts it, and "everyone experiences this delay regardless of search method". That is worth reading whichever app you pick, because it caps what any polling tool can do.

eSnipe's fastest check interval is one minute on every monitor, and most alerts arrive within about 15 to 45 seconds of a listing going live. On paper the two are in the same band, and neither publishes independent benchmarks. If an item sells within seconds of listing, both will sometimes lose to someone who happened to be refreshing at the right moment.

One practical difference is what happens when you stop looking. Trove's FAQ says it pauses "background cloud searches after 5 days of inactivity" to save server costs, and warns you in the app when that happens. eSnipe monitors run until you pause or delete them, which matters for the slow-burn searches that only match a couple of times a year.

This is the clearest gap. Trove's website says "Up to 20 Searches" and "Set up to 20 personalized searches"; its App Store and Google Play listings both say "Up to 15 saved searches". Either way there is a ceiling, and a reseller who tracks dozens of model numbers, part codes or misspellings will hit it. The site's "No limitations" line refers to there being no paid tier rather than to the search count.

eSnipe has no cap. You can create as many monitors as you like, each with its own keywords, price range, condition, listing type and negative keywords, and each pointed at its own channel. For a buyer with three or four searches the cap is irrelevant; for anyone building a proper watch list, it is the deciding factor.

Trove sends push notifications through its app, and says they arrive even when the app is closed or the phone is asleep because the searching happens on its cloud servers. One FAQ answer, contrasting Trove with eBay's once-a-day emails, says Trove "notifies you by email the moment a matching item is found"; the homepage and both store listings describe app notifications only, so treat email as unconfirmed until you see it in the app. Discord and SMS are not listed anywhere.

eSnipe delivers to a Discord webhook, chosen per monitor so each search can post into its own channel, and to phone push through the eSnipe app on iPhone and Android. There is no email or SMS. For a solo buyer the phone notifications are roughly equivalent. For a group, a Discord channel that several people can watch, react to and argue over is something Trove does not offer.

Trove's homepage says "All of eBays search filters are available to so you only get alerts to what you want", but does not list them individually, and negative keywords are not mentioned. What it does list is a regional setting: "Trove supports multiple eBay regions UK, AUS, EUR etc.", chosen in the app settings. It also sends "auction alerts before they end", which is a genuinely different kind of alert from a new-listing ping and one eSnipe does not offer.

eSnipe filters each monitor by price range, condition, listing type (auction or Buy It Now) and negative keywords. Negative keywords are the noise control that matters most for resellers, and eSnipe makes them explicit per monitor. Where Trove is stronger is the ending-soon reminder and the switchable regional sites; where eSnipe is stronger is documented, per-search exclusion terms and listing-type filtering you can see and edit on a web dashboard.

Both apps stay out of your eBay account. Trove's FAQ says it "doesn't handle eBay login or payment details" and its homepage says "No access to your account required"; you buy in the eBay app. eSnipe reads public search results and never asks for eBay credentials. Neither bids or buys on your behalf, though Trove says in-app buying "may be added in the future".

Trove states it uses "eBay's official developer and partner tools" and is "approved to use eBay's APIs and branding" while not being owned or operated by eBay. eSnipe is likewise not affiliated with or endorsed by eBay. On track record, Trove's founding year is not listed; its App Store page showed a 4.3 rating from 21 ratings and a version 4.07.0 release on 3 March when read.

Because both are free, there is no cost to running them side by side. A sensible split is to keep your handful of high-value, ending-soon auction watches in Trove, where the pre-close reminder earns its place, and to put the bulk of your keyword searches on eSnipe, where the lack of a cap, the negative keywords and the Discord routing do the heavy lifting. If you find Trove's 15 or 20 slots are enough and you never want Discord, you may not need the second app at all.
