eSnipe vs eBay saved searches: do you need a third-party alert?

eBay's saved searches are the feature most buyers should try first. eBay's help page describes them plainly: "Save valuable shopping time by creating saved searches for the items you regularly search eBay for, and we'll send you email alerts when new items matching your search are listed." You create one by selecting "Save this search" at the top of any results page, it appears in your feed and under Saved on the homepage, and you can unsubscribe from the emails with the envelope icon. It costs nothing beyond the eBay account you already have.

eSnipe exists for the narrower case where a saved search is not fast or flexible enough. It watches public eBay search results at an interval you choose, one minute at the fastest, and sends an alert to a Discord webhook or to the eSnipe app on your phone. It does not bid, snipe or buy, and it never asks for your eBay login. eSnipe is not affiliated with or endorsed by eBay.

If you are buying something you can wait for, saved searches are enough. If you are trying to be the first person to see a listing, that is the job eSnipe is built for.

This page tries to be careful here. eBay's saved searches help page says you will receive email alerts "whenever new items match your search or if there are updates to your saved search". It does not say how often those emails go out, how long after a listing appears they are sent, or whether push and email are batched. The push notifications page adds only that "the number of messages we send varies based on your activity" and that Android battery-saver settings can delay notifications. So we mark the speed cell "Not listed" rather than repeat a figure eBay's own pages do not give.

eSnipe's timing is something we can state because we run it: each monitor is checked on a schedule you set, with one minute as the fastest option, and most alerts land within about 15 to 45 seconds of the listing going live. That is the whole difference in a sentence. A saved search tells you that something matched; eSnipe is designed to tell you before the listing has been up long enough for anyone else to act.

For a good share of purchases that difference does not matter. For a mispriced Buy It Now, a sought-after card or a part that a dozen other people have a search for, it usually does.

eBay delivers saved-search alerts by email by default, and the eBay app can push them: its push notifications help page lists "Notifications on the searches you've saved" as a category you can switch on under Saved Searches, with step-by-step instructions for iOS and Android. If email is how you like to be told about things, eBay wins outright, because eSnipe does not send email at all.

eSnipe sends to two places. Each monitor can post to its own Discord webhook, which means a server can have one channel per search and a group can watch the same feed. Each monitor can also send a push notification through the eSnipe app on iPhone or Android. There is no SMS on either side as far as eBay's help pages state.

The practical distinction is that eBay's alerts go to you, inside your eBay account, while eSnipe's can go to a shared channel that has nothing to do with any one person's account.

A saved search carries whatever filters you applied on the results page before saving it. eBay's help page gives "price, color, or type of listing" as examples, and notes that editing an existing search creates a new saved search with the new filters rather than changing the old one. Because it is eBay's own search, you have every category-specific filter eBay offers, which is more than eSnipe's list.

eSnipe filters each monitor by price range, condition, listing type (auction or Buy It Now) and negative keywords. Negative keywords are what most buyers end up wanting: a search for a phone model that quietly drops "case", "screen protector" and "for parts" before it ever alerts you. eBay's help page for saved searches does not mention exclusion words, so we mark that "Not listed" rather than assume it is unsupported.

If you need a very specific item-specifics filter, save the search on eBay. If you need a clean, fast feed of the right listings, eSnipe's smaller set is designed for that.

eBay saved searches are free as part of an eBay account; there is no plan, cap or upgrade that eBay's help page mentions. eSnipe is also free, with unlimited monitors and no tiers. It is funded through the eBay Partner Network, which pays eSnipe a commission when a purchase follows an alert link, and the price you pay on eBay is unchanged.

The only cost either one carries is attention. Saved-search emails are easy to ignore and easy to miss; a Discord ping or a phone push is harder to miss, which is the point, and also a reason to keep your eSnipe monitors tight so the alerts you get are ones you want.

Saved searches take seconds: run the search, tap "Save this search", and optionally turn on the Saved Searches category under Notifications in the eBay app. Deleting one is a tap on the heart icon. There is nothing to install and nothing to connect.

eSnipe takes a few minutes: create a monitor with keywords and filters, then paste a Discord webhook URL, or install the phone app and switch on push for that monitor. No eBay sign-in is needed because it only reads public search results.

Most eSnipe users keep their eBay saved searches. The sensible split is by urgency: leave the slow-moving wants on eBay, where the email is a fine reminder and the feed shows you what is around, and put the handful of searches where being first matters on eSnipe with a one-minute interval and a Discord channel or push.

Because both are free, there is nothing to cancel and nothing lost by running them side by side. If you find that a saved-search email regularly arrives after the item has sold, that search is the one to move.
